Most visits to Melbourne C.B.D result in a quick bite or latte in Degraves St, and it is there where you’ll find The Quarter Cafe. Its European influences extend from the alfresco “street” dining area through to the warm homely atmosphere and ambient lighting, with its toasty walls displaying the black and white photos of some of Europe’s most loved places. Its name was derived from the precinct, known by locals as The Flinders Quarter. It is easy to mistaken Degraves st for a back alley or strata found in Spain or Greece, hence when you look up at the northern end of the street the landmark property the “Majorca apartments” sits proud, re enforcing the European influence.
Degraves St, like many of Melbourne’s lane ways has evolved into what Melbournians class as, the essence of cafe culture, it’s not just a cafe precinct, it’s a second home, a place where the world meets to breath and pause for a moment, leaving aside their worries while they sip on a latte and enjoy life.
Degraves St is very popular amongst visitors to Melbourne they mingle amongst the mesh of office workers, shoppers, students and commuters, all looking to experience the vibe that Degraves St has on offer.
In recent years local Government has recognised the significance of such precincts with its historical and architectural Values, and has worked closely with local traders to develop and maintain the social integrity of the precinct, creating a space for all to enjoy.
The street is popular amongst the lovers of the arts be it those that frequent the many theatres in the C.B.D or the artists nestled in amongst the various buildings surrounding the C.A.E and the City Library.
The Quarter is only a stone’s throw away from Melbourne’s transport Hub, Flinders St Station and even though it surrounded by a network of trams, when you step into the street you become immersed in its beauty, quite often forgetting you are in a large city in Australia. It’s what just happens when you’re there; you often find yourself looking to discover more of its hidden little gems, a kind feeling you get when you think you’ve discovered a place all of your own, but then quickly realise that others too have been seduced, it’s that feeling that keeps you coming back.
